Today, nearly one million people in the UK are living with dementia. One in two of us will be affected by it in our lifetime – whether by caring for someone with the diagnosis, developing it ourselves, or both. It’s the biggest health and social challenge of our time.

I have been personally affected by the effects of dementia on my late father. As the youngest of my dad's children, my experience of him was very different to the big, strong and switched on man everyone else grew to know and love. I often think about what our relationship would have been like today had it not been for this devastating condition, and I grieve what dementia has stolen from him and from me.

This is why I’m taking on the Camino Quest, trekking 66km through rural Galicia, Spain to fundraise £3,000 for Dementia UK - the specialist dementia nursing charity that is there for the whole family. Dementia UK's Admiral Nurses, provide expert, compassionate advice and support to anyone affected by dementia, whenever it is needed.
